Presidential elections in the United States traditionally arouse great interest in Ukraine, as the course chosen by the American leader determines the nature of military, economic, and diplomatic support for the country. In 2024, the competition between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, representing the Democrats, is particularly important, as the election could affect the extent of support Ukraine needs to defend its statehood and sovereignty against Russian aggression.

Ukraine's political position

The Ukrainian government avoids making explicit statements, maintaining a neutral stance to avoid accusations of interference in US internal affairs. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that regardless of the election results, the United States will remain Ukraine's key partner, emphasizing the importance of continued American support, especially in the context of military assistance. However, the rhetoric of Donald Trump, who promised in his election campaign to “end US involvement in Ukraine's war with Russia,” is a cause for concern. This could mean a reduction in military aid, which would increase Ukraine's dependence on European partners, including the Baltic states and Poland, which are willing to step up support for the security of their borders.

On the other hand, the Harris administration promises to maintain support for Ukraine. According to political scientist Alexander Windman, Democrats may increase sanctions pressure on Russia and increase aid, including the transfer of modern weapons, which will have a significant impact on Ukraine's ability to resist aggression.

Positions of Ukrainian experts

Ukrainian analysts share opinions on the consequences of the victory of both candidates. Political analyst Ihor Chalenko notes that the best choice for Ukraine will be a candidate who can guarantee stable support and strengthen military cooperation. “Regardless of the outcome of the election, Ukraine needs to prepare for potential changes in US foreign policy. Trump's victory may require a revision of strategic planning and increased cooperation with the EU,” the expert emphasized.

Andriy Shevchenko, Ukrainian diplomat and international relations expert, also emphasizes the need to adapt to possible changes. He points to the risk of reduced aid if Trump wins, but notes that this will force Ukraine to more actively engage the support of the EU and NATO. “Ukraine needs to build coalitions among its allies, such as Poland and Lithuania, to compensate for a possible decline in American support,” he said.

Opinions of student youth

Ukrainian youth, especially students, are actively discussing the US election. For many of them, American support in the war is not only a political issue, but also a personal one. Opinions on this topic vary among students. For example, some young people believe that a Democratic victory is more favorable for Ukraine, as continued support is crucial for achieving a stable peace. In their opinion, a democratic administration will continue to provide not only military but also humanitarian aid to help rebuild the affected areas.

Another part believes that Ukraine should rely on its own strength, as American policy may change regardless of the election results. They emphasize the importance of building strong ties with European countries, believing that cooperation with Europe is becoming a top priority for Ukraine. Thus, even if the US reduces its support, we will be able to develop coalitions in Europe to compensate for this loss.

The role of social networks and media

Young people are actively sharing their opinions on social media while reflecting on the election. They are discussing how the US election will affect their future, preferring to analyze not only Ukrainian media but also international sources. This interest is due to the fact that the results of the US elections will directly affect support for Ukraine in the political arena, especially in the military context.

Ukraine's position on the US elections is based on neutral diplomacy, albeit with a certain emphasis on stable support. Political experts emphasize the need for Ukraine to adapt to potential changes, while young people discuss how the election could affect their future, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with Europe. Regardless of who wins the election, Ukraine should continue to develop its strategic partnerships with European countries and build a strong international coalition to ensure its own security.
